The two interconnected historic squares in Roudnice nad Labem were so tightly packed and defined by the terrain with two access roads that gradually Charles Square became an unpleasant and dysfunctional traffic junction. The authors solved the separation of the intensive urban traffic from the central zone and the predominant pedestrian traffic on the sloping, historical area of the square. By using an interesting system of differently high staircases, they managed to create a central quiet place without the chaos of public transport, complemented by greenery, new original urban furniture and also, for example, a city map made of engraved granite. The insertion of the staircases has given the square a new quality without compromising its historical essence.
